Gas pressure regulators are designed to maintain constant downstream gas pressure, regardless of changes in the gas flow or in the conditions of the upstream pressure.

Ideally, they restrict the flow from the upstream (or inlet) pressure side to balance exactly what the downstream (outlet) gas pressure should be.
